Our journey to Belize began at the end of a very different trip. We were heading back to Boston from Mexico, after a short, jam packed excursion to Chichen-Itza, Coba and Tulum. We had immersed ourselves in the sweet waters of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, and had bathed in THREE cenotes(deep sinkholes, or caves-ancient Maya meditation chambers), considered fountains of youth and insight. Jason's research in the Maya Calendar and traditions had reached a new peak, and he had meditated each day on a Maya day sign, creating beautiful collage cards for each one(soon to be printed and available!) We were there during the first days of a new period in the Calendar, representing "The Flowering of Galactic Consciousness" I found myself mulling over these words and their meaning-letting them rest in my heart, and listening to their story. I began picturing a beautiful flower of radiant light, with countless petals, each touching and gracing the one before, all moving out from the center. I imagined that, if one petal were plucked, it would affect the order of the entire perfect structure. I also saw that each petal was intrinsically connected to the others and the center-All received nourishment from the same source, but the sun would shine differently on the various groupings of petals within the flower. More on that is forthcoming but, needless to say, I was moved by the meditation and the journey. It was painful when it had to end. We managed to wrench ourselves from Tulum(after a morning visit to the Grand Cenote) and get to the Cancun Airport to come home. We switched planes in Miami, and had to carry our bags through customs for inspection, always an ordeal, as we often have instruments and oversized bags, and it is always THEN that gravity decides to play tricks on us. It was in the agonizing, slow moving line, that we felt a prickle on the back of our necks- We both turned around to look behind us and THERE, In MIAMI!! were our 2 friends, Emma and Aaron, from Norway, ME (Really, You can't get they-ah from hee-yah) It's virtually impossible to put into words the striking vision these two create. They are both extremely tall, and Aaron has long, wild, NATTY dreadlocks. They are the hardest working Hippies I have ever met-We knew them from a unique, undying progressive scene in the backwoods of ME. They live in a suped up VW bus (complete with solar Hot Tub) We were STUNNED to see them there. Turns out, they were heading back from Belize, and we were all on the SAME PLANE to Boston! We finally made it through customs, and walked through the airport towards our gate, as they told us about the place they had bought, and just finalized, in Belize- BELLYFULL CAFE They said they hoped we could come down sometime, and just then, we looked down to see, on the floor, a GIANT Nebula Galaxy, painted on the tiles of the airport. We stopped to walk all the arms of the galaxy(of galactic consciousness) and knew we would be going to Belize one day. That was November of 2008, and after saving our pennies over a year of extremely hard work, we got to Belize, via Cancun(and a stopover to visit our lovely Tulum) in November 2009. We sliced out a full month for our voyage. Once again, there were challenges in Gettin' They-ah. We took the long slow bus from Chetumal, crossing a very confusing customs, with unformed officials shouting out dollar amounts for visas, etc.. The customs lady almost didn't let Jason in the country, because his passport was ratty, having gone through the wash. But we stayed strong, and got in, and back on the bus. 4 or so hours later we were arriving in Belize City. It was nearing 6pm and we knew buses didn't run late in Belize, so we planned to spend the night in the City, take in the sights, visit the various BLISS memorials (This is a good story, but later) and continue onward the 2 more hours to Bellyfull Cafe in the next day or 2. So we got off the bus, preparing to orient ourselves, with the typical daze that comes with a brand new place when, again, a tickle, and we look over to see AARON!!! WHAT???!!!! He had just picked his Dad up from the airport and was heading home on the last bus! We changed our plans and went with them and that began our adventures in Belize. There are so many stories to tell of Bellyfull Cafe, and Emma and Aaron, (and Aaron's Dad!) their Guatemalan and Garifuna neighbors, their 10 acres of fruit tree filled jungle, Emma's amazing cooking, Machetes and new friends from Tulum, swimming in the Seibun, The James Line Bus... Hopefully, we will have time to tell all the stories someday, if we're not too busy making new ones! For now, I will concentrate on the recordings which started to obsess me- I had a seed of a dream of having a recording studio in Belize, and it came true! We even gave it a name- The Bellyfull Booty-O (because we are pirates) I hope you enjoy the recordings, and the story of their roots, as much as we enjoyed collecting them!
