Track 2 Jammin' with the kids in Dangriga 18 November 2009

The day after our Hopkins introduction to Garifuna culture, we headed to DANGRIGA, the Garifuna culture capital of Belize.

We got there at about noon and preparations were definitely under way for a grand celebration. There was a palpable energy
of excitement in the air. Still, the town was relatively quiet(the calm before the storm).

We went to Emma and Aaron's favorite little bar/cafe, off the main street. We were amazed they had ever found the place, since it
just looked like a house from the outside. Inside, it was cool and comfortable. One small gold toothed Garifuna man was running the
bar. There were wooden tables and benches to sit at and instruments lying around, waiting to be played.

I was a little restless and went outside to play with the kids who were hanging out on the dusty street. I had brought my Hula Hoop so I played
games and hooped with the kids until we all got tired. They followed me into the bar and started picking up instruments and playing and WOW!

These kids were incredible! There were 3 of them, probably around 7 or 8 years old, and they SCHOOLED US! One boy was particularly
adept, and alternated between shaker, bass drum and guitar-playing the intricate complex Punta Rhythms with a casual genius.

Jason jumped in the mix and tried to learn from this boy wonder.

On this track you hear the boy on bass drum, Jason on a smaller djembe-like drum, another small child on shaker and all of

us hooting and hollering!
